The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.”

— Luke 17: 5 & 6-NIV

The Journey Behind the Words

I have always loved to write. I fell in love with writing in elementary school. I enjoyed writing fiction. It was fun to create characters and the journeys my stories would take them on. English was my favorite subject all through school. Some of my teachers suggested I be a writer; I was young and didn’t take it seriously. Years later my professor told me I wrote very well and should consider writing as a career. I listened, more seriously this time. The thought stayed with me for years, but I was raising a family and working. You know how that goes!

Growing up, I would watch my mom write letters to family and friends. I would ask her what she was writing about and sometimes she would read the letters to me. They sounded as though she was speaking to someone in person. Her letters were alive! Mom shared with me that, since she was a child, she wanted to be a writer. She had a 3rd grade education. Her grandmother made her stop going to school so she could learn to cook and clean house. In the 1920s education for girls was not a priority. She continued to teach herself without her grandmother knowing. Mom was not a quitter-I will always admire her courage.

I almost forgot about being a writer. I have the opportunity now that my kids are adults, I’ve retired from my job and my husband is supportive. Mom’s example of perseverance and determination to continue her education by self-teaching; reminds me that I have those traits as well.

Life Beyond the Keyboard

I have been married for 41 years. My husband and I love listening to music that takes us back to the good old days. I get a kick out of embarrassing my granddaughters by dancing “The Mashed Potatoes” in public!
